Chapter 21: Bangor
Killian drove me to Bangor at five in the morning.
I had left the children asleep, with our neighbor's wife on the couch downstairs and a note on the fridge.
I did not speak for the first two hours.
He didn't ask me to.
He kept one hand on the wheel and the other on my knee, and every so often he squeezed it.
The hospital room was small and bright.
My mother lay in the bed with a tube in her arm, in a thin gown.
My aunt sat beside her, a bigger woman in the same cardigan, holding a paper cup.
"She hasn't eaten in three days," my aunt said, without any greeting. "She sold her car, and she sold her machines. She's been sleeping in my spare room and getting up at four to call real estate people."
"I know," I said.
"She's done a bad thing, Willa. I'm not saying she hasn't."
"I know."
"But she's my sister, and I won't have her talked to like she's nothing."
"Nobody's going to talk to her like she's nothing."
My aunt looked at Killian, standing in the doorway with his hands in his jacket pockets.
"Walk me to the coffee machine," she said to him.
He went.
I was alone with my mother.
She opened her eyes.
"Baby," she said hoarsely.
I stood at the foot of the bed, and I didn't go closer.
"They say it's exhaustion," she said. "And my blood pressure. They want to keep me two days."
"Good."
"You didn't have to come."
"My aunt texted."
"I know she did."
She turned her head on the pillow.
She had never looked small to me before, and she did now.
