Chapter 22: Never Jilted

The paper was on the porch on Sunday morning, in its plastic sleeve.

The headline ran across the top of the front page in thick black type.

SHE WAS NEVER JILTED.

Under it was a photograph of me from the church supper, standing in the aisle with the bank stub in my hand.

I read the whole article standing on the mat with my coffee going cold.

They had printed my name in every paragraph, and the board's statement, and the lawyer's.

They had left my mother's name out of the headline and put it in the third line.

I did not know what to feel.

At nine o'clock, someone knocked on the door.

It was the mother from the preschool, the one in the puffy vest, who had laughed at me in the parking lot and passed my engagement photo around.

She held a foil-covered dish in both hands.

Three of our neighbors were out on their lawns with their coffee, watching.

"Willa," she said. "I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"For the picture. For laughing. For five years of it." She swallowed. "I told them all it was your fault. I didn't even know you."

"No," I said. "You didn't."

"I made lasagna. It isn't enough."

"It isn't."

"I know." She held it out. "I'd still like you to have it."

I took the dish.

I didn't thank her, and I didn't slam the door.

I said, "Come to the school thing in December," and I shut it softly.

She stood on my porch a moment, and then she went down the steps, nodding.

When I turned around, all three of my children were standing on the stairs in their pajamas.
