Chapter 12: The Green Card
Odile did not sit down.
She stood at my kitchen table with her coat still on and the brown envelope flat under her hand.
Casimir and I stood across from her in blankets and damp wool, still smelling of the lake.
"I took this out of the Alpha's desk on Sunday night," Odile said.
"He was at the shore with his wolf. I had the key because I keep the council's accounts."
She turned the envelope over and pushed it across the wood.
It was the one I'd mailed.
My handwriting ran across the front, and the registered stamp sat in the corner.
The flap had been slit open with a letter knife, cleanly, from end to end.
"It was in the second drawer, under the ledger," Odile said.
"There was a card clipped to it."
She laid the card on the table.
It was a small green postal card.
That kind comes back to the sender to show who signed for a letter.
I picked it up.
Under the printed lines, a signature crossed the box, black ink, quick and slanting.
