Chapter 12: The Seat
Garret left without another word.
He walked out into the snow, and Dolores followed him, and the black car pulled away from the curb with both of them in it.
Brianne shut the door and locked it.
Then she came and stood next to Perry in front of the long table and all the little vests.
"You okay?"
"No."
"Good. You shouldn't be." She bumped his shoulder with hers. "You were right, though. For the record. He doesn't get to decide."
Perry didn't hear from Garret for six days.
No texts. No groceries. No black car outside the window at night.
He taught his classes. He fixed the barre with a new length of oak and a lot of wood glue. He ran the showcase numbers with forty kids at the church hall on Kedzie.
The slow little boy went left when everybody else went right, every single time.
Perry loved him anyway.
On Saturday the woman in green called.
"There's a gathering tomorrow," she said. "Sunday lunch at the den. The whole pack. The Alpha called it himself."
"Why are you telling me?"
"Because he asked that the carrier be there." She paused. "He's never asked for anything at a gathering. Not once in nine years."
Perry almost didn't go.
Brianne drove him anyway.
The den was the long lodge behind the Burkhart house, the one with three chimneys.
Inside, it was one huge room with a beamed ceiling and a fire at each end, and three hundred wolves sitting at long wooden tables eating roast beef so rare it was practically still mooing.
They all went quiet when Perry walked in.
The woman in green waved to him from a table near the back. A few of the other wolf mothers nodded.
