Chapter 15: The Fire
Garret was on his feet before Perry was.
He pulled Perry up off the floor with one arm.
Through the front window, orange light jumped against the glass.
The front door was burning from the outside.
Gasoline ran under it in a bright line and caught the floor, and the fire came across Perry's mother's boards in one long breath.
"Brianne," Perry said.
"Go." Garret pushed him toward the office. "Get them. Back stairs. Go."
Perry ran.
Through the office, past Mom's photo in the sequined top hat, up the inside stairs two at a time.
The smoke was already coming up behind him.
The kitchen was dark. The living room was dark.
Brianne was asleep on the couch with one arm hanging off it.
Her son was curled in a sleeping bag on the rug, in dinosaur pajamas.
"Bri! Up! Fire!"
She came off the couch swinging, the way she always did, and then she smelled it and her face changed.
"Peanut."
"I've got him."
Perry scooped his nephew up, sleeping bag and all.
Fifty pounds of seven-year-old. He weighed nothing.
The boy woke up halfway to the kitchen.
