Chapter 7: White Roses
The driver got out and opened the back door.
Dolores stepped onto the wet road in her camel coat.
She walked up the path toward the two men, and this time she used the cane.
Garret stood up.
"You followed us," he said.
"I come every month." She stopped at the iron fence. "You're the ones who followed me. You just got here second."
She looked down at the little stone with the moss scraped off it.
At the white roses.
"Every month," Perry said. "For how long?"
She didn't answer right away.
The wind moved the yew branches over their heads.
"Fifty-five years," she said.
Garret said, "Grandmother."
Only that.
She opened the iron gate and came in and stood over the stone.
"I was nineteen," she said. "My mother was keeper then. She was teaching me the Book, page by page, the way she was taught."
She looked at Perry, not at Garret.
"I found that page in the summer of 1971. He wrote it himself, the carrier. In his own hand. He lived through the birth. He raised his son in a rented room by the river. He worked on the docks, and he taught the boy his letters, and when the boy was three, the elders came and took him to the den."
Perry put his hand on his stomach without meaning to.
"They took him," he said.
"With a paper and a seal. Lawfully." Her mouth went thin. "He wrote down the date. He wrote down what the boy was wearing."
"And you cut it out."
"With my father's razor. In my bedroom. At two in the morning." She said it like a list. "Then I wrote one line on the next page in my best hand. The carrier died at the birth. A dead man is a tragedy. A father robbed by his own pack is a disgrace, and I was nineteen and I was a Burkhart."
