Chapter 11: The Ledger
The Feast of the Immaculate Conception falls on the eighth of December.
The Vasari women start cooking for it in November.
By the third week of the month the main kitchen smelled of anise and fried dough.
Nine women in aprons were rolling cannoli shells at the long table under Carmela's eye.
I stood at the end with a rolling pin and no idea what I was doing.
"Thinner," said Carmela.
"It's thin," I said.
"It's a doormat.
"Thinner."
The women laughed, kindly, and one of them showed me how to turn the dough on the board with the heel of her palm.
They had known for six weeks who I was and what the twins were.
Nobody said Rocco's name.
They watched me the way women watch someone who might be about to cry, and then they handed me a rag.
I liked them, which I hadn't expected.
Nico and I had agreed that morning to say nothing to Biagio about the account.
He had put the statements in the safe and gone to the wharf with a face like a locked door.
I had told him I would look at the church.
"If Rocco was one of yours, the church has a record," I had said.
