Chapter 16: The Test

Linnea's POV

Milo went into isolation that night, behind a glass door with a sign on it.

Nobody could go in without a gown, a mask and a long scrub at the sink.

His counts would fall before they rose, the doctor said, and the first weeks were the hardest.

I stood at the window and watched him sleep with Pickle tucked under his arm.

Winston stood beside me in a hospital robe, holding the IV pole he was not supposed to be walking with.

"Sit down," I said.

"I'm fine."

"You have a hole in your hip. Sit."

He sat on the bench by the window and winced.

I sat next to him, close enough that our shoulders touched.

Neither of us moved.

"Juliet left my mother's driveway at four," he said. "She never went to the door."

"What did she want there?"

"I don't know. My man says she sat with the phone in her lap and made one call."

"To who?"

"It went to the prepaid. It rang out."

I let that sit.

Then I unzipped the pocket of my bag and took out what I had carried for four and a half years.

It was a plastic stick in a folded handkerchief.

I put it in his hand.

He looked at it without understanding. Then he saw the two pink lines.

"That was in your coat," he said, slowly.

"It was in my coat pocket when the car went over. I got out of the window, and I took it with me."
