Chapter 23: Not Tonight
The study on Linden Street was full of strangers in dark jackets.
A detective stood at the desk with the safe door open in front of him and a clipboard in his hand.
He was a tired man in his fifties with a wet raincoat, and he had the evidence bag with the brake line in his other hand.
"Mr. Garrick," he said. "I'm told you've been holding this since April four years ago."
"Yes."
"Do you want a lawyer present?"
"I want you to take all of it," Winston said. "And then I want to tell you what else you ought to have."
The detective looked at him for a long moment.
"Go ahead."
Winston did not sit.
He told it from the beginning, standing in his own study with his hands at his sides.
The tow yard, the yellow ticket, the mechanic's note.
The four years.
Then he took the storage unit key from his pocket and laid it on the desk beside the open safe.
I stood against the bookcase and watched him say each part in plain words.
He did not say it was an accident. He did not say he had meant well.
When he came to the last part, he stopped and drew breath.
"And tonight my mother told my wife, in her own kitchen, that she cut the line."
The detective's pen stopped.
"Your mother," he said.
"Harriet Garrick."
"The Foundation Harriet Garrick."
"Yes."
One of the uniformed men near the door turned to look at his partner.
"We got a call this evening from her attorney," the detective said carefully. "He said you'd tampered with evidence in a death investigation. He asked us to secure the house."
