Chapter 28: Questions for the Chair
Harriet gave her speech at nine o'clock, and it was a beautiful speech.
She stood at the podium in silver gray with her hands folded and thanked the mayor, the donors, and the volunteers who had given thirty-one years to children who needed them.
She spoke about a daughter-in-law who had come back from the dead, and the room made a soft, wet sound.
I sat at the head table with my hands in my lap and my mother's silk against my back.
Winston sat on my left.
On my right, an empty chair held a card that said JULIET CARROW.
"And so," Harriet said, "it is my great joy to hand this Foundation to a woman who has suffered more than any of us should."
She held out a hand.
"Linnea. Come and take your chair."
The applause was warm and long.
I stood, and Winston stood with me, and then he let go of my hand.
I climbed the steps to the stage.
Harriet kissed my cheek in front of everyone and stepped one pace to the side of the podium.
I adjusted the microphone down to my height.
"Thank you, Harriet," I said. "I'd like to accept. And since this is a night for questions, I'd like to take you up on something you offered me."
Her smile did not move.
"Mrs. Garrick offered me this microphone for as long as I liked," I said to the ballroom. "She said she would answer anything I asked. Is that still true?"
"Of course it is, dear."
"In front of everyone?"
"Then I'll start with something small. The Tuesday before my car went into the river, you had it serviced. You told me it was an anniversary gift."
"I did. It was meant kindly."
"You said you'd had it done at your own mechanic."
"My mechanic has been with this family for twenty years."
"He swears he never touched the car," I said. "He swears it on his children. He told my husband so."
