Chapter 24: Not One Finger
His hand was cold and wet.
I looked down at it, holding mine, and at the ring between his fingers.
Then I took my hand back.
"No," I said.
It wasn't loud. The glass room was so quiet I heard the lawyer's pen click shut.
Daniel stayed on his knees.
"Lena."
"Get up, Daniel," I said. "Your board is watching you."
He looked over his shoulder at the seven of them, at his mother, at the bowls of white chrysanthemums.
Something went out of his shoulders.
He stood up slowly and walked back to his own seat.
Nobody spoke.
He opened the blue folder.
The lawyer at the end of the table came around and stood at his elbow, turning pages and pointing to yellow tabs.
Daniel signed.
He signed page after page, and every time the pen scratched, his mother flinched.
On the last page he stopped with the pen in the air.
Then he wrote his name, the whole of it, in the careful slanted hand he'd used on our marriage certificate.
The lawyer turned the folder around and slid it to Holden.
Holden signed under Daniel's name without reading a word. He'd read them all in April.
