Chapter 25: On Camera
The reporter swung around, and the camera came with her.
"Mrs. Rutherford! Mrs. Rutherford, is it true? Did you take the money?"
Holden's hand tightened at my back.
"Let me," he said under his breath.
"No."
I walked across the wet sidewalk until I could see where her mascara had run into her powder.
She lifted her chin at me, still beautiful.
"Go on," Vanessa said. "Tell them you didn't."
"My shop closes at seven," I said. "You know where it is. Come and ask me yourself."
The reporter held the microphone out to me. "Mrs. Rutherford, is that a yes or a no?"
"It's an address," I said. "Main Street. She's welcome."
I walked back to the Range Rover and got in, and I didn't look at the camera.
Holden got in beside me and didn't start the engine.
"You just invited her to your shop," he said.
"I did."
"Alone."
"Mei will be in the cooler."
He looked at me for a long moment.
Then he glanced up at the ceiling of the car, the way Margaret had once glanced at my shop's camera.
"Ah," he said.
