Chapter 17: Two Mothers
"Can you walk out the front door?" I said.
"There's an alarm. He sets it at eleven."
"The kitchen?"
"It beeps. It doesn't call anyone." A pause. "Twenty minutes. Corner of the lane, past the hedge."
I left Bean asleep with Andrew on the birth center couch.
He didn't argue. He just handed me his car keys, because his car was bigger than my Honda.
Trish drove. I brought Bean's spare car seat and her son's old booster seat from the attic.
At twelve fifty we were parked past the hedge on a dark lane in Guilford with the headlights off.
At twelve fifty-four a kitchen door opened up the hill and beeped twice.
Philippa came down the lawn in a cream robe and running shoes.
She had a baby carrier in one hand and a sleeping four-year-old over her shoulder in dinosaur pajamas.
A diaper bag. One suitcase rolling behind her, bumping over the grass.
Trish got out and took the suitcase without a word.
I took the four-year-old.
He was heavy and warm and smelled like baby shampoo.
He opened one eye at me and said, "Are you the fire lady?"
