Chapter 20: Andrew
I wrote back to Philippa with one hand.
I'll be there.
Then I put the phone down, rocked my daughter, and thought about Andrew's hands under my shirt until she fell asleep.
The next day was Friday.
He was polite all day, which was unbearable.
He said good morning. He asked about Bean's weight gain. He fixed the front step, finally, with a hammer and a lot of muttering.
He didn't say one word about the roof.
At four o'clock Trish came in for her shift and found me watching him through the window of his office.
"Oh no," she said.
"What?"
"You've got the face."
"I don't have a face."
"You have the face you had about that bartender when we were nineteen. The one with the forearms." She put her bag down. "Go."
"Go where?"
"To his house. Tonight. I'll take the Bean. I'll take her till noon tomorrow." She pointed at me. "You're fifteen weeks out. I signed your six-week check myself. You're healed, you're cleared and you're making everybody in this building tired."
He'd handed my chart over to her in June, the week after the hearing.
He hadn't told me why.
Trish had.
"He said he couldn't be your doctor anymore," she'd told me at the time. "He said it wasn't appropriate. Then he went red to the ears and left the room."
I'd thought about that a lot.
At eight that night I walked three blocks through Fells Point in a green sundress I hadn't worn since before I was pregnant.
It fit differently now. I decided I liked how.
Andrew's house was a narrow brick rowhouse with a blue door and one window box with nothing in it.
I knocked.
He opened it in a gray T-shirt and jeans, barefoot, with a dish towel over his shoulder.
He looked at the dress.
