Chapter 13: The Fine Print
Imogen ironed the kitchen towels at three in the morning, and then she ironed them again.
The blue mug sat on the island where Griffin had left it.
She did not put it back in the high cabinet.
At seven-forty she parked in the Oakes driveway with a folder on the passenger seat.
His boots were not in the hall tray.
"Mr. Griffin went out at six, ma'am," the maid said. "He didn't say where."
"Thank you."
The dining room held Garrison, Delphine, the family lawyer, and Tobias, who was setting out bagels with the care of a man arranging flowers on a grave.
"Imogen," Tobias said, and put a hand to his chest. "I'm so sorry about all this."
"You've had it since yesterday," Imogen said. "I'd like to go first."
She did not sit.
She took four copies out of the folder, bound with a black clip, and laid one in front of each of them.
Garrison turned his over.
"There's a table of contents."
"Page numbers help," Imogen said.
Delphine had already found the first page. Tobias's copy landed on his bagel.
"Count one," Imogen said. "I wrote the note that went on top of page fourteen. It said, For I. I wrote it in my own hand, and I gave it to my grandmother."
Nobody spoke.
"Count two. I sat in a car outside the airport while he signed. I had a phone in my hand. I did not call her off."
"Page fourteen," Garrison said slowly. "A marriage."
"Count three. For sixteen days I let your son think I was a stranger who bought him. I kept a log of his offenses and wrote him better scores than he earned."
