Chapter 24: The Wolf I Saved
The hens came to the wedding in a wicker basket with a blue ribbon on the lid.
The Dowager had them set at the end of the front pew in the castle chapel at Norvaine.
"I promised," she said. "I never break a promise to a hen."
It was the first warm week of spring.
The snow had gone back up the mountains, and the courtyard was full of soldiers who had polished their boots twice.
Odalie did Ianthe's hair.
It took her an hour, a hundred pins and some language Ianthe hadn't known she had.
"There," she said finally, and stood back. "It'll stay up for the vows. After that, it's his problem."
"Odie."
"What? I read novels. I know what happens after the vows."
She looked at Ianthe in the glass, and her dimples went away, and her eyes filled.
"Mama would have bitten someone today," she said. "Out of happiness."
She put her cheek against Ianthe's hair, very carefully, so as not to spoil it.
Papa walked Ianthe down the aisle.
He had wound every clock in the castle to strike together at the vows.
