Chapter 17: Through the Bars
The cells under the Moot Hall were cut into the rock and smelled of lamp oil and wet stone.
Hakon came down the last stair a little after midnight with a lantern in his hand.
The turnkey at the bottom was an old man in a grey coat, with a limp and a closed face.
"I'm not supposed to let anyone in, Highness," he said.
"I know," Hakon said.
"The Duke's orders. Nobody but the Council," the old man said.
"I know that too."
The old man looked at the lantern, and then at the crescent glowing faintly through Hakon's coat.
He took a ring of keys from his belt.
"I carried the Captain's coffin eleven years ago," he said. "Four of us did. We were told to say he fell."
Hakon said nothing.
"I've got a sore knee," the old man said.
"I'm going up to sit on the stairs for an hour. If I hear anyone coming, I'll cough."
He unlocked the end door, hung the keys on a peg, and limped away.
Hakon went in.
The cell was narrow, with a stone bench, a bucket, a high slit of window, and one lamp in the wall.
Joren sat on the bench with his back against the stone and his boots off.
His hands were in iron cuffs, chained to a ring bolted into the wall, and he lifted his head.
