Chapter 18: The King's Hip

The guards took Hakon by both arms and he did not resist.

He let them lead him up the stair and into the Council's anteroom.

His collar was open, and the bite on his neck was there for every clerk in the building to see.

They sat him on a bench.

They left Joren below.

An hour passed.

Then another.

Hakon sat with his hands between his knees and his eyes on the door.

Through the new bond he felt the faint, steady hum of Joren, a floor below and forty paces east.

He was alive.

He was angry.

He was thinking about Hakon, and that was enough to keep Hakon sitting still.

At noon the doors of the anteroom opened and the Duke came in with two lords and a secretary, and nobody smiled.

"Highness," said Wexel. "The Council has met."

"I assumed," Hakon said.

"We have decided that the Moot shall sit in three days."

"Under section four, any matter of section nine must be heard within three days of the call."

"And the Sworn Guard?" Hakon said.

"Remains in the Stone Tower until then."

The Duke's eyes went to Hakon's neck and stayed there.

"I am sorry for the bite, Highness. It makes things simpler for us, and harder for you."

"A bitten bond can't be undone."

"That was the idea," Hakon said.
