Chapter 21: The Silver Circle
Two hundred lords of the twelve houses sat in the Moot Hall.
Every one of them had come to see a Crown Prince fall.
Hakon stood at the center of the floor with his hands behind him and his collar open, so that the bite showed.
He had not buttoned it.
Joren stood a pace to his left in his black guard's coat.
A silver ring and an iron one hung on a cord at his throat.
Nobody had chained him.
The King's litter had been set at the head of the dais.
The old man in it sat upright under a black shawl.
The one hour he had promised himself had stretched to a day.
The Duke of Wexel rose from the center chair of twelve.
"My lords of the Moot," he said. "I will be brief."
He was never brief.
He spoke for most of an hour in a smooth and reasonable voice, and Hakon listened to every word.
He spoke of the Charter and its age.
He spoke of the twelve houses that had signed it at the foot of the mountain in the first winter.
