Chapter 24: The Wolf Prince
Elske Wexel left Stenhavn on the morning train in the first week of spring, with one trunk and a case of law books.
Hakon and Joren saw her off on the platform.
Neither of them wore a uniform.
Hakon had a plain coat and a scarf he had stolen from the stables.
Joren held the porter's receipt for the trunk in his teeth while he buttoned his gloves.
"You'll write," Hakon said.
"I'll write you a legal opinion once a month," Elske said.
She had her braid pinned up for the journey and a new green scarf at her neck.
"On the reforms. You'll hate every word."
"I'll answer every one," Hakon said.
"The Charter's still a mess. Section two is a disgrace."
"I know," Hakon said.
"Then fix it." She looked at Joren. "And you. Don't let him sign anything after midnight."
"I'll tie him to the bed."
"I heard that," said Elske, and was gone up the steps into the carriage, laughing, with her ears pink.
The whistle blew.
They stood and watched the train out of sight along the water.
