Chapter 10: What the River Took

Corbin's POV

I did not sleep.

Larissa slept on the coats with her cheek on my arm and her braid come half undone, and I lay on my back in the dark and listened to my wolf.

It was loud.

It had been quiet for fifteen years, a low thin murmur at the back of my skull, and now it filled my whole chest.

I flexed my left hand and felt the claws answer, whole, to the very root.

The scar on the back of it was warm.

Hers was warm too, against my ribs.

I knew that without looking, the way I had always known where she was, as a faint pull somewhere south and west that I had never learned to call anything but home.

Upstairs the lodge was creaking back to life.

Somebody dragged a generator across the east porch, and a man's voice, my beta's, called Stonecrest wolves to the windows.

"Alpha?" he said, from the other side of the cellar door, quietly.

"Here."

"The wing's clear. Ashgrove pulled back to the road an hour ago. Wynne wants you."

"Tell her I'm coming."

His boots went away.

I stayed where I was a minute longer.

The first time I had held Larissa Aldren, she had not been breathing.

I was twelve.

It was the last night of the Muster, and the river behind the lodge was running high with snowmelt.

I had gone down to the water to be alone.

Above the rapids a man in a barn coat stood on the bank.

A little girl in a blue raincoat stood on the edge in front of him.
