Chapter 10: Bluff

Ronan's POV

I ran the whole way to the bridge on four legs, and I was too slow.

I knew it by the second mile.

My legs used to cover that road in half the time.

They didn't any more, and nobody in the valley knew it but Abel.

He ran at my flank in his gray wolf shape, matching my pace.

He was kind enough not to pass me.

The aunt had called as Mara drove away.

"She went to Joanne's," the aunt had said. "And Joanne's car just came on the scanner."

I hadn't finished the sentence.

Joanne's car lay on its roof at the bottom of the ravine, forty feet down, wedged between two granite slabs.

Ropes were tied off to the guardrail and a deputy stood at the edge with a flashlight and a bad face.

I shifted behind a truck and took the coat Abel held out.

"She's alive," Abel said. "I can hear her. She's talking."

"What is she saying?"

"She's asking for a pen."

I almost smiled.

"I'm going down," I said.

"Alpha, your shoulder."

"I'm going down."

I took the rope and went over the rail.

The slabs on either side of the car were the size of tables and the roof had folded into the front seat.

Joanne hung in her seatbelt with blood in her gray hair and one arm bent wrong.

"Hello, Mr. Draycott," she said. "I think this is my fault. I should have taken the back road."

"It's not your fault."

"Is Mara all right?"

"She's at your house."

"Good," Joanne said. "Because she would have gone off this bridge looking for me, and I won't have that."

I put my shoulder to the driver's door.

It didn't move.
