Chapter 15: The Moot Sits
The old courthouse had a courtroom no state judge had used in thirty years, and at nine on Saturday morning it was full.
The ten Alphas of the valley sat along a long oak table under the dusty flag, with the gray-hatted one in the middle chair.
Behind them every bench held wolves from every pack.
Deputies lined the aisle, and none of them looked happy to be there.
Dewitt Faulk sat alone at the defendant's table in a clean suit, with a lawyer at his elbow and a scab on his chin.
He smiled at me when I came in.
Ronan walked beside me down the aisle.
He had a fresh bandage under his shirt and he kept his hands visible, and he stopped one pace behind my chair.
Every wolf in the room watched him do it.
"The Moot is in session," the gray-hatted Alpha said. "Dewitt Faulk moves that the Ridge's human be barred for want of standing. Ms. Linwood, have you a word?"
"I do," I said, and stood. "But I'd rather someone else started."
Abel came down the aisle with a canvas bag in both arms and a state inspector walking behind him.
He set a green ledger on the table in front of the gray hat.
"It was in the false wall in the east wing," Abel said. "Forty names. The state's key opened the door at six this morning."
Faulk's lawyer half rose.
"The wall is private property."
"It's evidence," the inspector said. "I have the warrant in my pocket, and the deputy outside the door."
The gray hat opened the ledger and turned two pages.
He stopped.
His face did something I'd never seen a face do, going very still and very old at once.
