Chapter 46: What the Aunt Said
Ronan's POV
The barn smelled of hay and old harness, and the oldest aunt had set a lantern on a bale and sat down beside it.
She had her good shawl on, and her shoes, and her hands folded.
"Shut the door, boy," she said.
I shut it.
"Sit."
"I'd rather stand."
"You'll want to sit."
I sat on the bale across from her.
She looked at me for a long time, and she was the only person alive who had ever looked at me that way without wanting anything.
"You sat on her bed for three hours on Wednesday night," she said. "And you didn't know."
"Whose bed?"
"Your mother's."
I felt the hay prick through my jeans.
"The brass tag was on the foot rail," she said. "H-4, D. Draycott. They carried it from Hearthside with the box. You never looked at the rail, because you were bleeding, and I never said, because you were bleeding."
"Auntie."
"I knew from the minute they brought you down." Her hands tightened on each other. "I waited until you were dry and whole and had slept in your own bed. I wanted you to have a clean night first."
She reached into her shawl and took out a folded paper, and she held it out.
"It was under the mattress, in the slats. I put my hand in on Wednesday to see if the bed was warm, and I found it."
It was the back of a Hearthside medicine chart, folded in four, gone soft and brown.
The corner of it had my name on it in pencil.
"I read one line," she said. "It said, to whoever finds this. I stopped there. It isn't mine."
