Chapter 5: Cabin Road
At breakfast I asked Ronan why a dozen wolves had run from a woman in socks.
He was eating eggs at the head of the table and he didn't look up.
"They smelled me on you," he said.
"They were looking at me, not you."
"They were looking at the person standing on my porch in my house."
"That's not an answer."
"It's the one you're getting."
Abel put down the coffeepot and looked at the ceiling.
The aunts, who had been loud a moment earlier, found something to do with the bread.
I wrote it all down in my notebook, because I always do, and Ronan watched me do it.
"You're keeping a file on me," he said.
"I'm keeping a file on everything."
My phone buzzed on the table.
It was an unknown number, and the message was short.
"I work nights at Hearthside. I saw where they took the old man. Cabin on Tamarack Road, past the quarry gate. Please hurry. They give him the drip at noon."
I turned the phone around and slid it across the table.
Ronan read it once.
"I'm coming with you," he said.
"I wasn't going to ask."
"Good."
"I was going to tell you."
His mouth moved at one corner.
It was the first time I'd seen it do that.
We took his pickup, an old green one with a bench seat.
The cab was small and he was not.
He drove with one hand on the wheel and the other on the gearshift, and the gearshift sat about two inches from my knee.
I looked out the window at the pines.
I watched fence posts blur past.
At the third bend he said, "There's glass in your hair."
