Chapter 11: Midnight Visitor

I woke at dawn with a heavy arm across my waist and a warm body against my back.

For a moment I lay there and let myself have it.

Then Bram's breathing changed, and the arm lifted away.

By the time I turned over, he was sitting on the far edge of the bed with his back to me, pulling on his trousers.

"How's your side?" I said.

"Fine."

"You said a word last night."

"I said a lot of words."

"One of them was in a voice that wasn't yours."

"My wolf talks when I'm tired," he said, without turning. "It means nothing. Forget it."

I sat up with the sheet against my chest.

"And the rest?"

He stood and crossed to the window and stared out at the snow.

"I shouldn't have let it happen," he said. "You were hurt, and angry, and days out of a marriage. I took advantage of that."

"I climbed on you."

"I should have stopped you."

"Do you regret it?"

His shoulders stiffened.

"It breaks the terms. If you decide to go back to Ashfall, and you might, when he's begging and the pack is shouting for you, I won't have you walking away with this on your head."

I stared at him.

"You think I'm going back."

"I think a woman who spent three years loving a man doesn't stop in a week."

"That's what you think of me."

"It's what I think of anyone," Bram said. "It's no insult."

He had said that to me before, in the truck, about being wolfless. He always said it wasn't an insult.

I picked up my dress from the floor and pulled it over my head, fast.

"Cora."

"I'm going to help Hester with the bread."

"Cora, wait."

"You're my Alpha on paper, and I'm your wife on paper. Rule three says no touching. You're right, and I'll keep it."
