Chapter 17: The Stone Remembers

I shifted on top of the Moon Stone in front of two packs.

This time it didn't hurt.

My wolf rose to meet me, and the change ran through my bones smooth and clean.

My dress tore at the seams.

White fur poured over my arms, and the world dropped away beneath me and came back huge.

I stood on the Stone on four legs, taller than the tallest warrior in the circle, and I lifted my head.

Nobody in the circle moved.

The Stone under my paws began to glow.

It was a pale light at first, rising from the granite in thin lines that crawled across its face and up the rock into the air.

Then the lines reached out.

One ran to Bram and wrapped once around his wrist, warm and gold.

One ran to Hester.

And one, a pale thin thread that was cracked and ragged at the end, ran to the litter, to the grey man lying on it.

It did not touch him.

It stopped a hand's width short, and hung there, severed.

"By the old pack," the Ashfall elder whispered. "That's a cut bond."

"It was a well," said Hester, loud enough for the whole circle. "She was the well, and he drank from it. Look at where the thread ends."

I let them look.

Every wolf on that bank could see how the light flowed away from me and stopped at Garrick, and how it had been flowing for years, in faded silver marks all along the line.

"She didn't poison him," the elder said. His voice cracked. "She fed him. For three years she fed him, and he took it."

A low roar rose from Ashfall's warriors.

The big man who had asked for me took his hand off his knife.

Imogen had gone white to the lips.

She stood by the litter with the bottle still in her hand, and she opened her mouth, and for once nothing soft came out.

Garrick turned his face away from all of us and wept.
