Chapter 5: Berry Iced Tea

I kept my eyes on the screen.

My character was up to her waist in the water now.

"Never," I whispered.

His hand closed on the armrest between us.

"Say that again."

"I was never going to tell you. You'd have filed it under Thursdays."

"Juno."

"Shh. This is my best scene."

He sat beside me for the whole film without touching me.

I didn't hear a word of my own dialogue.

When the lights came up and people stood to clap, he was already gone.

The after-party was on the roof of a hotel on Sunset, all string lights and white couches and the city spread out below.

I had a rule for the night.

Smile, thank people, leave by eleven.

At ten fifteen Damon found me by the glass railing.

He'd taken his tie off.

He stood between me and the party with his back to everyone, and nobody came near us.

"You're coming home with me tonight," he said.

"I don't have a home with you."

"You have a room. You have a key. You have a side of the bed."

"I had a garage."

His jaw flexed.

"You're carrying my child."

"I'm carrying a child. You weren't invited to that either."

"You don't get to decide that alone."

"I decided it alone in a trailer, on the floor, while you were holding her hand."

That landed.

I watched it go in.

He looked away, out at the lights, for the first time since I'd known him.

"It's not what you think," he said.

"Then tell me what it is."

He didn't.

He just looked back at me with those gray eyes.

"That's what I thought," I said.
