Chapter 17: Night Shift

Natasha's POV

We reached the hospital in Queens a little after midnight.

Byron drove, and he did not say a word until we turned into the ambulance bay.

A man stood under the light by the staff door with a camera hanging from his neck.

Dee was in front of him in her scrubs and her Mets jacket, with her arms folded.

"I'm not going to say it again," she said. "Leave, or I call security."

"I'm on a public sidewalk."

"You're on hospital property. You're in my ambulance bay."

I was out of the car before Byron had stopped it.

"Dee."

"I'm fine," she said, without turning around. "He's been asking my charge nurse what I earn."

The man lifted his camera and took a picture of me.

Byron got out of the driver's side. He did not hurry, and he did not raise his voice.

"Give me the card," he said.

"I don't take orders from..."

"I'm not asking for the camera. I'm asking for the card, and for the name of whoever paid you."

The man looked at him, then at the two security guards coming through the staff door at a jog.

Dee's charge nurse was behind them, still in her gloves.

"That's him," Dee said. "That's the one."

The man started backing up.

"It's a law firm," he said. "A woman called. It's Aspinwall's lawyers. They said it was for the public record."

"Which firm?"

He said the name.

It was the same lawyer who had stood in the boardroom and said I had no standing.

"Thank you," I said.

The guards walked him to the street.
