Chapter 21: The List

Eli's POV

The London guest list was eight pages long.

I read every one of them at a folding table in the production office.

I had a black marker in my hand and the tour manager standing over my shoulder.

"It's printed," he said. "It's final. You can't just cross people out."

"Watch me."

I uncapped the marker.

Page one was the label's list: executives, sponsors, the people who had called my phone for two days to tell me what a mistake I was making.

I drew a line through the first name.

Then through the second, and the third.

When I was done, there was a white space at the top of the page.

I wrote *Wingate, Louisa. Row 8, aisle.*

She had chosen it that morning over toast in the hotel, without a second's thought.

"That's the spot I stood in the first night in Madrid," she had said. "Not the front. The front is for people who need to be seen. I want to hear the room."

Under it I wrote *Wingate, Maggie. Row 8, next to her.*

I looked at the two lines for a while.

"There's one more," the tour manager said, and slid a sheet across.

It was a printed email from a woman at the clinic in Columbus.

*Our boss would like to fly in for the London show. She says the staff has chipped in for the ticket.*

I read it twice.

Then I wrote the rest of the clinic into the white space, one name at a time.
