Chapter 20: Gala Eve
The night before the gala, a king-size bed arrived at the estate on a truck.
Two men carried it up the main staircase, past the family portraits.
Anders stood in the hall with a tape measure and a pained expression.
"I did not order this," he said.
"My mother did," I said.
A card was taped to the headboard.
It said, in my mother's hand: For the grandchildren. Do not let it squeak. Love, Mom.
"She drove home yesterday," said Anders. "She left this in the mail."
"She left a bed in the mail."
"It has a thirty-day return window," said Anders.
"Do not use it."
By nine o'clock the old single bed was in the hall, and the new one stood in the middle of his room, bare and enormous.
The color-coded calendar was still on the wall. Tomorrow's square said, in red: Gala.
The one after that said: ?
I sat on the edge of the new mattress and listened to it not squeak.
"Helen's lawyer called," said Anders. He stood by the window with his hands behind his back. "He is bringing a guest tomorrow who can settle the paper."
"Which guest?"
"He wouldn't say. He said it's a surprise."
"Surprises are for people who haven't done the reading."
"I know," said Anders.
I took the index card out of my pocket and turned it over in my fingers.
Tomorrow, at eight-forty, Tobin would walk onto a stage with a bucket, and Bree's cameras would be on, and two hundred people would be watching.
I had decided what I would do, and it was the hardest thing I'd ever put on a card.
