Chapter 21: The Bucket

The Carrow Foundation gala was held in the grand ballroom of a downtown hotel.

Three chandeliers hung over the tables, and a banner said LATHER AND COMPANY in letters a foot high.

Bree had arrived at five with a crew of four, and by seven she had put her name on the stage lights.

There was a steel bucket by the podium. It had a ribbon on it.

I stood in the wings at eight-thirty-five and was quietly sick into a hotel ice bucket.

"Better?" said Anders, behind me.

"No."

"The seat is next to you."

"I know where the seat is," I said. "I'm going to be in front of it."

Out in the ballroom, two hundred people sat at round tables with their phones up.

Helen sat at the front, with her husband's wheelchair beside her and the small gray lawyer on her other side.

The lawyer had brought a woman I had never seen.

She wore a navy suit and a lanyard, and she was eating the shrimp.

At eight-thirty-eight, the emcee, who was a board member in a bow tie, said, "And now, a few words from Mrs. Anders Carrow."

It was Helen who had arranged it. I had not asked her to.

My legs went forward by themselves.

"Good evening," I said, and my voice went through the speakers and came back at me from the walls.

"My name is Leonie Salminen," I said. "I'm Mrs. Anders Carrow. I have never gone first in my life, and I'm going first now, so nobody can say that someone told me what to say."

A few people laughed. Most of them were Anders's cousins.

"Three weeks ago I walked down an aisle toward the wrong brother, and I married the right one. I thought that was a mistake. It was the best thing I ever did."
