Chapter 11: Full Moon

"I'll kill her," Maudie said.

"Get in line," Roan said.

Lysander sat down on his bed and stared at the empty windowsill.

"Can you make more?" I asked.

"The root steeps three days." He rubbed his face. "There isn't any more."

Nobody said anything.

We all knew where the vial had gone. Clarice didn't want it. Her uncle did.

"Then I go out there with the cuff," I said.

"The cuff won't hold you alone," Lysander said. "You saw."

"Then we break his call," Roan said.

We all looked at him.

"A wolf can only answer one call at a time. So can an Alpha." Roan cracked his knuckles.

"If two pack heirs go for each other's throats in front of him, he has to put us down. Or lose the school."

Lysander looked up slowly.

"You want to fight me in front of two hundred people."

"I want to fight you most days. This way it's useful."

Lysander almost smiled.

"I'm going to break your nose," he said.

"Try."

The next night the moon came up over the lake as round as a coin.

Every man in the school crowded the wall to watch.

My skin was crawling before I even stepped onto the sand.

The moon pulled at me.

I'd rubbed ash into every pulse I had. Maudie's cuff burned on my left wrist under my sleeve.

Varrick stood in the middle of the ring with the cedar box.

He opened it and took out my blue scarf.

Then he took something else out of his coat pocket and held it up to the torchlight.

A little stoppered vial, half full of green-black liquid.
