Chapter 16: What Brynn Was Told

Brynn had picked the bottom of the Ridge road grade.

I understood why when I saw it, a bend in the old county road with a guardrail newer than the trees around it.

She was waiting on the shoulder in a plain grey coat, with no makeup and no pack pin.

I had told Rodrick where I was going, and I had told Rafe nothing.

I did not want him to hear it standing beside me.

"You came," she said.

"You said you'd tell me everything."

"I will." Her voice cracked on the second word. "I didn't know about the brakes, Linnet. I swear it. I only found out this week, just like you."

"What did you know?"

She looked at the guardrail.

"When I was twenty-one, my father sat me down in his study," she said. "He said there was a girl in the pack who didn't shift. He said she was an Averill. He said that if her blood ever woke, the council would be finished, and the Standishes would be finished, and so would I."

"Finished how?"

"Just finished. No seat, no name, no father. I thought that meant you'd take the Luna chair."

"And that's why you were kind to me."

"At first, yes. I was told to watch you." Her eyes came up, wet and furious. "Then I wasn't watching anymore. You were funny. You remembered what everyone drank. You were the only woman in that lodge who ever asked how I was, and it killed me, because I was meant to be ruining you."
