Chapter 11: Papa

"I don't know who gave it to me," I said. "It was always just there."

"Who raised you?"

"Glenn and Trudy Kinross," I said. "They're my mom and dad."

His hand tightened on mine.

"They have six sons," he said slowly. "And a daughter with gray eyes that match nobody's."

"Yes."

"They knew," he said. "They had to know. A man doesn't find a baby in the snow and not know."

I hadn't said anything about snow.

"I don't think they stole me," I said. "Dad hugged me twice at my party before he let me go to bed."

"He cried because he's guilty," the King said.

His voice had dropped low and dangerous, and the red was coming back into his eyes.

I felt it in the link, a hard pressure that grew each second.

"Wait," I said. "Please. Look at me."

"Sixteen years," he said. "I've searched every pack in the North. I buried a woman I loved and I've been alone in my own head, and he has had you at his table the whole time."

"And he fed me," I said. "And he taught me to ride a horse. And when I was nine and I broke my arm, he carried me four miles to the clinic."

"Wynn."

"He doesn't remember any of it now, but he did it," I said. "And I won't stand here and let you say he's a thief until I've asked him."

The red hung in his eyes.

I could feel the whole camp holding still outside the tent flap.
