Chapter 16: Flour in the Jar
Wynn's POV
Dad came home at midnight with grass on his knees and a bruise coming up along his jaw.
He didn't say what had happened on the ridge, and none of us asked.
He sat down at the kitchen table across from me, put his hands flat on the wood, and looked at me for a long time.
"I don't know you," he said. "But I wrote sixteen years of notes about a girl, and I can't stop reading them."
"I know, Dad," I said.
"The King has a hundred wolves at my fence and my Beta has not slept in two days," he said. "Tell me what you need."
I told him.
Mom's clinic was in the back of the house, and she kept her moonroot there in a locked glass cabinet, a spoonful at a time, for the worst nights of the worst injuries.
Her hands remembered the key even though her head didn't.
At two in the morning, all six of my brothers stood in the pack hall kitchen in their socks.
The barrel was empty, because Ellis had dumped it as I asked.
On the shelf by the door sat a second brown jar, labelled PACK WATER in Lester's neat block letters.
There was always a second jar.
He didn't trust the cup to last a week, so he kept a spare.
"Flour," Mom whispered, and held out a bag from the pantry. "And cinnamon, for the smell. It will cloud the water the same way."
The twins were delighted.
"I want it noted," one of them said, pouring flour into the jar, "that I invented the pepper-sauce toothpaste, and I'm still the better prankster."
"You're both terrible," said the baby, who was holding the lamp, and who had not stopped holding my sleeve since the road.
