Dovie's POV
Royce came back on the Tuesday of Thanksgiving week, in the snow, on foot.
He stood outside the iron gate with his right arm in a cast to the elbow and his cap in his left hand.
I watched him from the porch.
Four weeks had passed since the Sing.
In that time I had learned the Roan's kitchen and healed eleven wolves.
I had slept every night in a bed with an Alpha who was learning to sleep.
I had not once thought of Royce Gragg.
"Alpha," he said, when Duncan walked down. His voice was hoarse. "Please."
"You're on my road."
"Three of our cubs are down with a fever. The doctor says it's in the lungs."
He swallowed.
"Daddy won't ask, so I did. She's the only one who can fix it."
"Her name is Miss Moretz."
"Miss Moretz," said Royce, and I saw what it cost him.
Duncan did not turn around, but he spoke to me.
"It's yours to decide, Dovie."
I thought about the three of them.
I thought about the cubs in the packhouse, who were small and loud and had never once been cruel to me.
"I'll go," I said.
Duncan drove.
