Chapter 11: Mama's Cabin
The boots behind me were my father's.
Burl Moretz stood in the snow at the bottom of the pasture with his cap in his hands.
He had a coffee can under his arm.
He had a pair of bolt cutters in the other hand.
He was fifty-four and looked seventy.
I had seen him sober perhaps a dozen times in my life, and this was one of them.
"Dovie," he said.
"Daddy."
He walked past me without lifting his eyes.
He cut Loyal Gragg's lock off the shed door with one snap of the cutters.
The chain slid down into the snow.
"I should have done that when you were eighteen," he said. "I should have done a lot of things."
He pushed the door open.
It was a small room, one window, a woodstove, a cot, and a table with a lamp.
The air smelled of old cedar and dust and cold.
Somebody had stacked rakes and fence wire against one wall.
On the lintel over the door, cut into the wood with a knife, were two letters.
R.M.
My throat hurt.
"This was hers," my father said. "She slept here."
He looked at the cot.
"Folks would knock in the night, and she'd get up."
"I know that," I said.
"She kept a book."
He held out the coffee can.
"Every birth and every sickness, everything she did. I took it out of her bag after, and I hid it."
