I woke before light with my cheek on his chest and the stove burned down to coals.
He slept on his back with one arm over his head, the first night I had ever seen him sleep without a frown.
The window had gone from black to gray.
The gray fell across his ribs.
I lay and looked at the old seam of two hands.
It was fainter than it had been in October. I had done that.
I put my own palm against it, to see how the hands compared.
Mine did not cover them.
The hands that had made that seam were bigger than mine, and broader across the heel.
The red can had been in my head all night.
I got up, wrapped in my mother's quilt, and sat down at the table.
I peeled the tape off the lid.
Inside was a black-and-white composition book, soft at the corners and swollen with damp.
I opened it on the table.
The first page was dated twenty-nine years ago in a round, careful hand.
