Chapter 13: The Stone
Duncan's POV
She told me to go, and I went.
She said it quietly, sitting on the floor of her mother's house with the notebook shut against her chest.
"I need to be alone with her," Dovie said. "Not with you. Not with him. Go."
I had spent twenty-six years being the thing a woman died for.
I knew better than to argue with the child it had been done to.
Burl Moretz stood in the doorway with snow on his cap.
He stepped aside to let me out.
"She's behind the sheep barn," he said, low. "Under the sourwood. I laid the stones on her myself."
"Stones?"
"Loyal wouldn't have her in the pack ground. He said a woman who left a baby behind hadn't earned the hill."
I did not answer that.
If I had, I would have gone to Loyal Gragg's house, and Dovie had told me to go.
Burl looked at my face, and I saw him decide to say the rest.
"I carried her coat to your father's door that night," he said. "I saw you on the table. You were nine, and you had no color in you at all."
