Chapter 2: The Room That Does Not Pity Him

Jasper brings the altered shipment ledger to Nolan and Emmett's studio under the pretext of needing work, and as they examine it they confirm the entries were deliberately manipulated to frame him, while Jasper quietly tests their trust and conceals the sealed envelope still hidden in his coat.

The ledger was already in Jasper's hand when he stopped outside the studio door.

It was heavier than it should have been. Not from the paper. From what was in it.

Someone had gone through forty pages of shipment records and changed eleven numbers. Not sloppily. Carefully. A single entry in each quarter, each one shifting inventory toward his signature.

He had spent three hours at his kitchen table proving it.

Now he had to find out if anyone else would see it.

The argument reached him before he knocked. Emmett's voice, flat and carrying, saying something about Nolan treating the espresso machine like a crime scene.

'If you label my coffee as evidence, I will have you disbarred.'

'I'm not a lawyer. I'm an archivist. And I will absolutely label it.'

Jasper pushed the door open.

The studio was warm. It smelled like old paper and burnt espresso. A corkboard covered one wall, names and dates connected by red string. A long table sat in the middle, stacked with legal-aid forms and file boxes.

Nolan stood at the espresso machine, holding a small evidence bag. Emmett leaned against the table with a mug in his hand.

They both looked at him.

Jasper held up the ledger.

'I was told you two might be able to help me find temporary work,' he said. 'I brought a reference.'

The lie sat on his tongue like a stone.

Nolan's eyes moved from Jasper's face to the ledger. Then back. His expression didn't change, but something in his posture shifted. He set down the evidence bag.

'Come in,' he said. 'Close the door.'

Emmett pushed his glasses up. He didn't smile. He watched Jasper cross the room and set the ledger on the table.

'That's a Callahan Group shipping ledger,' Emmett said. 'Internal. Not the kind of thing you carry around for job references.'

'I know what it is,' Jasper said. 'I was the operations manager. Until this morning.'

He said it the way he had practiced in the elevator. Flat. Without heat.

Nobody in this room was going to see him flinch.

The silence held for a beat.

Then Nolan moved. He pulled out a chair and sat, not waiting to be asked. His hands folded on the table.

'Show me,' he said.

Jasper opened the ledger to the first flagged page.

He had marked the altered entries with small pencil ticks. Eleven of them. Each one shifted a shipment total by a few units. Not enough to trigger an audit. Enough to make a missing shipment look like his error.

Nolan leaned forward. His eyes moved across the numbers.

Emmett came around the table and stood behind him.

For a long moment, no one spoke.

The room was quiet except for the faint hum of the espresso machine.

'These are altered,' Nolan said.

'Clerical error,' Jasper said. 'I made a mistake. That's why they let me go. I'm not looking to fight it. I just need work.'

The false confession felt like swallowing broken glass.

But he needed to know.

Would they take the easy answer? Would they nod and pat him on the shoulder and send him toward a temp agency?

That would tell him everything.

Emmett made a sound. Low. Disbelieving.

'A clerical error,' he repeated. 'That's what you're going with.'

'It's the simplest explanation.'

'No,' Emmett said. 'It's the dumbest one.'

He reached past Jasper and turned the page. Then the next. His fingers moved with the care of someone handling a fragile document.

'Look at the ink,' he said. 'The original entries are ballpoint. The altered ones are gel. Same color family, but the sheen is different. And the pressure.'

He tapped one of the flagged numbers.

'The original pen left an impression in the paper. The gel pen didn't. Someone wrote over a blank spot, not a mistake. They removed the original entry and replaced it.'

Nolan looked up at Jasper.

'You didn't do this,' he said.

Not a question.

Jasper didn't answer. He watched Nolan's face, the way the man's eyes had lost their earlier mischief and gone still.

This was the test. Not the ledger. The room.

'You're not here for work,' Nolan said. 'You're here to see if we'll call you a liar.'

'I'm here because I need to know who I can trust.'

The words came out before Jasper could stop them.

Emmett straightened. He looked at Jasper for a long moment, then turned and walked to a stack of legal-aid forms. He lifted the pile and pulled out a small portable scanner.

'I don't scan anything without preserving the untouched original,' he said. 'If you want a record of this, we do it right.'

Nolan nodded.

'He means it. He's made me re-file things twice because I touched a page wrong.'

Jasper felt something loosen in his chest.

Not trust. Not yet. But the beginning of it.

'You think someone set me up,' he said.

'I think you already know someone did,' Nolan said. 'And I think you're carrying something else. Something you haven't put on the table.'

Emmett crossed his arms.

'What did you really carry out of Callahan Group?' he asked.

Jasper's hand moved before he could stop it. A small, involuntary press against his coat, against the lining where the envelope sat.

He felt it there. The sealed edge. The weight of forty years.

'Nothing that belongs to anyone else,' he said.

And left it at that.
