Chapter 13: The Name on Her Robe

Ji's school name had to fit on a cloth one hand wide.

She had written it the night before in the guest hall, with Shen's school brush.

The first try read LOW STE, because the cloth ended before the P did.

The second try fit every letter and was the size of rice.

She sewed that one over the torn place on her sleeve anyway.

It was the only part of her robe that had ever held a badge.

Luo inspected the stitches at the festival gate and took her time about it.

"They are very straight," she said at last.

"You cannot read it," Ji said.

"That is why I am praising the stitches," Luo replied.

The academy gatekeeper sat behind the entry table with his chipped front tooth resting on his lip.

A notice from Elder Tang hung beside him, sealed in dark red wax.

It said each entrant must wear the full name of their school where a judge could read it from three paces.

The gatekeeper made Ji walk back three paces and turn around.

She did it with her chin up, the way she had left the academy.
