Chapter 17: The Trial Nobody Owns
Tang's herald read the new notice in the voice of a man reading a bill.
The paired carry would move to the lower court, he said, for the safety of the spectators.
Ropes, sashes, and every aid beyond the body would be forbidden there.
He rolled up the notice and waited for the sound of agreement.
There was a pause where it should have been.
The course judge had arrived with gravel on both boots and her red cord swinging.
"A stone fell," she said, "and nobody will run that slope until the wall is mended."
"That part of your notice is correct."
"The ban on rope has nothing to do with the wall," she added.
The herald repeated that Elder Tang's authority covered the safety of the festival.
"Then he may send somebody to look at the wall," the judge replied.
An older man in a yellow cap had been mending the festival railing nearby.
The judge asked him to look, and he walked to the retaining wall and knocked on it with his knuckle in six places.
"Solid," he said at each one.
