The peg was still in the rail at the height of Ji's hip.
It was the same peg that had eaten her indigo robe on the day before the final, and nobody had thought to sand it.

The ring had finally come back, thin and slightly sulky, and she did not ask it for much.
The screens were gone, as they had been when she lost.
The wind came off the river and shouldered across the stones like a man late for something.
This time she did not stare at the wind.
She stared at the peg, which was the one thing on the course that did not change.
Her plan was to avoid the fold that had caught.
She tucked her lower robe into her belt, high above her knees, and tied it twice.
It looked foolish, and she let it look foolish.
Luo checked the knot and said it would hold through a flood.
Qiu stood three places down the line in a robe of unbroken white.
He had tied his hem up, as he had before, but only to the knee.
