Remy's POV
I had told my mother to wait until sundown, and she came an hour before it.
I should have known she would.
I was standing at the end of Odalie's lane with a cardboard cup of church coffee when the sedan's headlights came on behind me, and I knew the sound of that engine the way I knew my own pulse.
She'd driven the same Lincoln for twenty years.
I put the cup down on the fence post.
The car stopped, and the driver's door opened, and my mother got out.
She was fifty-eight and five-foot-four, with her silver hair in a knot, a black dress and a gold crucifix.
She had been to Mass that morning, and she was dressed for it still.
She looked at me, then at the old man kneeling in the gravel, then at the woman on the porch steps.
"Remy," she said.
"Mama."
"You told the pack to wait until sundown," my mother said.
"I did," I said.
"I thought I would see for myself.
"I thought I would make it easy."
