Chapter 18: The Surgeon

Elias's POV

The surgeon's waiting room had a fish tank, and I had never once looked at the fish.

I looked at them now, because I couldn't look at the receptionist, who had been told to expect me and was avoiding my eyes.

"He'll see you right away, Mr. Hartwell."

The surgeon was a tired man in his sixties with a cardigan under his white coat and a file already open on his desk.

He didn't stand.

"Sit," he said. "I'm sorry. I have bad news first."

"Cordelia Stockbridge's investigator," I said.

"You know." He rubbed his eyes. "Three weeks ago a man came in with a forged records request. A clerk on her second day handed over your old file, and the clerk is gone now."

"What did he take?"

"Everything that predates the reversal. Our archive system is a mess, and the old record and the new one are filed under two different numbers." He pushed a folder across the desk. "So he has the surgery, and he does not have this."

I opened it.

The first page was my reversal, with the date, the technique and the surgeon's signature.

The second was the follow-up, with the line I had read in the dark in the hospital corridor: motile count, confirmed.

The third was a typed statement, notarized, that the surgeon had clearly written that morning.

"I swear under penalty of perjury," I read aloud, "that on the Tuesday after the patient's wedding I reversed his vasectomy."

I turned the page.

"A follow-up three weeks later confirmed that he is fertile."

"I will sign it again in front of a judge. I will say it in front of a ballroom if you like." He leaned forward. "I do not enjoy being used against a patient."
