Chapter 24: The Full Table
At six o'clock on Christmas Eve, I stood at the head of my own table and asked everyone to raise a glass.
The table was new.
Callum had built it in October out of white oak, and it seated fourteen.
He had sanded it twice because I said I could feel a rough spot.
Then he had carved a small M.H. under the edge where only I would find it.
Bev sat on my left in her red cardigan, already on her second roll.
The retired lab technician sat beside her, having refused to be called a guest.
Across from them were the younger church woman and her husband, and the pastor with his wife.
Next to them sat the woman from the shop's register.
She had quit the day after the open house, and now she ran the front desk at Callum's workshop.
The man in the green parka sat at the far end.
His spaniel lay under his chair with its chin on my slipper.
And at the foot of the table, in a high chair with a yellow blanket over the back, Courtney's daughter was eating a green bean with great seriousness.
Courtney had driven up from Florida with her mother for the week.
She had been twelve hours on the road, and she had not let me carry a single bag.
"She's got your grandmother's blanket in her mouth again," her mother said. "I'm sorry, honey."
"Good," I said. "She can chew on it."
I looked down the length of the table.
Every chair was full.
A year ago, at this hour, I had stood at the end of a table with a serving spoon.
