The second Monday in November, Courtroom 3 was full by half past eight.
Harriet wasn't on the bench.
She had sent the final hearing out of the district the day the contract was filed.
A judge couldn't rule on a case about someone she'd trained.
So the visiting judge had driven over from Stamford.
He was seventy, bald and famously bored by theater.
Harriet sat in the second row of the gallery in a plain wool coat.
The cleaner sat beside her.
Behind them were the ER nurse, the pediatrician's wife, and two reporters.
The boys were at the bakery with Isaac's sister, eating cinnamon rolls they'd been promised for being brave.
Across the aisle, Elaine wore black.
Like a widow.
Kendra sat beside her in the navy suit with the emerald on her hand.
Peter sat at the end of their table.
He hadn't looked at his mother once since he walked in.
Tusk stood up first.
