On Sunday afternoon, I checked my chairs twice and got the same disappointing answer.

Five people were coming, including me.

I owned four good chairs and a stool intended for changing lightbulbs.

Cora's borrowed folding chair stood in the hall.

I had brought it home after Sadie's supper and nearly forgotten why.

I put it at the table and stopped planning to eat standing up.

For once, I wanted people in my home without apologizing for what it lacked.

I had bought the food I liked.

There was a warm loaf on the counter and a pot on the stove.

There were plain crackers because I wasn't obliged to develop better taste by six.
