Chapter 11: Four

Meg stood dripping on the kitchen floor with a towel around her shoulders and both hands wrapped around a mug.

Wes had put the kettle on without asking, and he stood by the stove with his arms folded.

Nobody sat.

"I walked," Meg said. "Brooke's asleep. I couldn't be in that room one more hour."

"Why?" I asked.

"Because I laughed at the gate. And I've been laughing at that gate for ten years."

She put down the mug.

Her hands were shaking so badly that tea spilled over the rim.

"Nora, there's a chat. Brooke, me, Lacey. It's called 'Four.' It's been running since freshman year."

"I'm the fifth."

"You're the one it's about."

I felt the kitchen get very quiet.

"Every time you asked the group something," Meg said, "we already had an answer. Lacey would decide it in Four first. Then you'd text, and we'd all say 'Guess,' and you'd guess, and Lacey would say close, and then she'd change the answer if you got it right."

"If I got it right."

"So you couldn't. That was the game. The one time you got it, the Michigan house, she was so mad she took your seat."

I put my hand flat on the counter.

Ten years of a joke, and I had not been dumb.

I had been losing a game with no winning move.

"Why?" I said. "What did she get?"

"Everything. She got who paid, and where, and when, and she got to be the one who knew." Meg's eyes filled. "You never said no to her. You were so good at not saying no."
